Gender Perspective in Elementary Schools Textbooks

The project „Gender Perspective in Elementary Schools Textbooks” was initiated in 2006 as a regional initiative under the leadership of S. Savić. Female students from the Center for Gender Studies at the University of Novi Sad have collaborated on the project.

The project focuses on the analysis of Serbian language textbooks for students whose first language is not Serbian (predominantly Hungarian-speaking students), but over time the focus has expanded to include religious education, Serbian as a mother tongue, Hungarian as a mother tongue, textbook materials for students with disabilities, and more. The project has resulted in a series of papers (seminar, bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral theses), concluding that the analyzed textbooks across various subjects in primary and secondary schools are not gender-sensitive, do not foster intercultural and interreligious dialogue, affirm gender stereotypes, and fail to develop the concept of “otherness.” Men dominate both as authors of (literary) texts and as characters depicted in the texts and accompanying illustrations. They are the main drivers of the plot, conflicts, and their resolution. Women’s roles are directed toward silent support of the male-dominated society, with the obligation to care physically and emotionally for the welfare of others in the family and society.

Recommendations have also been formulated to overcome implicit discrimination at various levels and in different forms present in textbook materials.
